February 24-28

Wow our last week of February!! Spring seems to be in the air…well for this week anyway!!

I’m looking forward to some sunshine and warmth to hopefully kill some of this sickness that has been going around. My house has been hit hard this year.

There is no school On Friday due to a PD day.

Please sign up to meet with me to discuss your child’s progress.

I am available Tuesday afternoon between 4:00-4:45, then Thursday and Friday until 3:00.

Thanks to those who have already signed up!

Literacy:

This week is assessment week for Fundations so we will take a break from formal teaching but will continue to work on tapping words. Please continue to work with your child on tapping at home.

We will continue writing working on writing a simple sentence. We will begin talking more about spaces between our words to make our writing easier to read. We will begin some book writing late this week or next week. This will help the children to practice to recall their writing from one time to the next.

Numeracy:

We are still practice breaking numbers into two parts. As well as all the skills of counting. Working on counting at home will help with consistency in the children’s count.

February 18-21

I hope everyone had a wonderful family day and were able to spend some time together 😊 We spent some time at the hockey rink and playing with puppies (and cleaning up after puppies🤦🏻‍♀️)!

Literacy:

We have been working on tapping out words in Fundations as well as printing the uppercase letters. This has been a great reminder of how to print the lowercase letters too.

We will finish unit 2 this week and will begin assessments next week. Keep working at home on printing and tapping.

Reading has been going well. Please remember to send the reading books back on Mondays as I have a limited quantity of books to share within our classroom. If a book does not get returned, your child doesn’t get to take a book home and they really look forward to this 😊

Mathematics:

We have been working on number combinations and the children are really enjoying it. We have talked a lot about dividing a set of counters into two groups and putting them back together and knowing that the number hasn’t changed. They have really taken to this skill.

We will continue to work on building combinations of number up to 10.

Family Day:

We will be having a small get together on Friday morning in our classroom from 8:30-9:15. Parents and/or family members are welcome to join us to play and have a small snack to celebrate family day in lieu of Mother’s and Father’s Day. Please try to limit to 1-2 people per family as we have limited space in our classroom 😊

I look forward to seeing you on Friday!

February 14

Good morning everyone!

I just realized that I didn’t post on Monday. I’ve not been feeling great this week, as have a lot of the students in class. Please remember if your child has a fever or needs medicine for a fever, has vomited or has diarrhea, it’s best to keep them home. It’s hard to be at your best when you don’t feel well. If your child is not attending school please send me an email to let me know they won’t be here.

Tomorrow is Valentines Day! Your child is invited to bring in a Valentine card for each of their friends in the classroom. We will make a holder today to put them in. You can find the names of the children in our class on the leader calendar that I send home each month. We have 15 students.

If you are on treats tomorrow for the class, we have lots of juice boxes left over from other treat days. Feel free to send in fruit, veggies, cupcakes, cookies or some other special treats! Thank you!

It is also red and pink day tomorrow. It’s a spirit day for special olympics fundraiser. If you can send in a small donation.

Reading:

I have been sending home books and most of them have returned to school!! Thank you for taking care of the books and returning them on time!! I do have a few that did not return to the school this week. Those children will not be taking a book until the others return. Please make sure to send the books back on Monday.

Thank you!

February 3- February 7

Good morning everyone!

Another new month! I can’t believe how fast time is going by.

Literacy:

The children are doing great in their reading groups. We are really working on pointing to the words and saying the words that are on the page. This draws attention to words of the page. Also we are working on using the beginning sound of a word with the pictures on the page to solve unknown words. Please don’t let your children Struggle on a word for more than 30 seconds, just tell them the word so they don’t become frustrated.

Please make sure to send the books back each Monday morning so your child can take another book the next week.

Fundations:

The students were introduced to tapping words last week. This will become a major part of our Fundations time from now to the end of the year. This week we will begin looking at how to print the uppercase letters as well.

Numeracy:

We will begin the parts of numbers this week. This means we will look at the combination of numbers that go together to make a number. For example 3,2; 4,1; 5,0 all are the same as it equal 5. It is basically simple addition without the signs. This skill is very challenging for kindergarten students so we will work on it the rest of the year.

Have a great week!

Used Book Sale

Hello everyone,

We had a used book sale today in the library. The children each got to pick a book and to take it home to keep. I forgot to mention it on the blog so I paid for the books as a treat to the children. They get to keep the book at home to enjoy!

Tapping!

Hey parents,

I am super excited about this unit for Fundations!! The students are learning to tap out simple 3 letter words. This is such a benefit to them for reading and writing. You will see them using it when they write (someone already used it yesterday during writing!!). They will use this skill for solving unknown words.

Here is an example of what tapping looks like:

January 27-January 31

Good morning! Wow our last week of January!! The children are settling back into routine nicely but we have some sickness going around our class 😔 hopefully everyone stays well.

Friday January 31 will be a school wide pajama day in support of the Special Olympics. Please send in a donation if you can!

Literacy:

We will be starting unit 2 in Fundations. I am sending home the package of homework tonight.

I am also sending home some Trick Word cards. These can be left at home to play games with your child. I have a two page sheet of games to play with the cards and will also be posting a video of me and some of the children playing the games so you can see them being played. I focus the camera on the game and not on the children.

Reading:

Last week we began reading in small groups. Everyone did great! I gave them really easy books to read so we can work on the skills that I am teaching. We learned about using Pointer Puppy and pointer power to point to each word as they read. We do this so our eyes and brain work together. Then we used our eagle eyes to look at the pictures if we didn’t know a word. Finally we used stretchy snake to look at the beginning sound of a word if we didn’t know it.

When you are reading with your child, make sure that they are pointing to each word and reading the word they are touching. Also learning the Trick Words will help them with reading as most of our books contain the words.

I sent the books on Friday and they are due back to school today (Monday). This is the way that I hope to send books each week. Please make sure to take care of the books and keep them in a safe place. Then return them each Monday. If the books are not returned, your child does not get to take another book home.

Numeracy:

We are continuing to work on the numbers to 6-10. This week we will finish up 8, 9, 10 and then move on to part part whole. Part part whole is understanding that 3 (part) and 2 (part) are parts of the number 5 (whole number).

Have a great week!
